Subject matter: The course aims to provide a legal technical linguistic preparation for Italian judges and prosecutors who already possess a good general knowledge of the English, French and Spanish languages. This project is carried out in collaboration with the Spanish Escuela Judicial, and with the participation of a number of foreign judges and prosecutors.
The aim of the course is to enable participants to make significant progress in their language skills through the use of materials designed to provide an in-depth study of the European legal systems and to gain knowledge of the judicial cooperation techniques and instruments.
In particular, after a brief introduction of the course in plenary session concerning issues related to the integration of the European judicial systems among the challenges of multilingualism and the search for a common language, participants will be divided into study groups of maximum fifteen participants, led by two coordinators (a linguist expert and a jurist with specific linguistic skills) who will guide the groups throughout the entire course.
The didactic program will encourage the direct involvement of participants in activities designed to improve their language skills, experimenting on both practical exercises and training modules focusing on the knowledge of both European judicial systems and European Community law and judicial cooperation instruments.
In this context, participants will be encouraged to develop their relational skills, draw up written texts, and participate directly in procedural or technical and judicial activities in the selected language.
Listening exercises will be practiced on court activities in the original language, including comprehension exercises on legislative texts and judgments, with regular discussion periods to be held with experts and simulation court proceedings.
In other words, the course aims to provide a legal linguistic training, understood not only as the study of technical terminology, but as a comprehensive training program aimed to develop both the knowledge of foreign judicial institutes and the Community judicial system, and relational skills, which are essential for establishing a direct dialogue between the various judicial authorities, which is key to judicial cooperation, at least according to the perspective developed within the European Area of freedom, security and justice.
Objectives: Improving participants’ language skills through the use of didactic instruments designed to provide an in-depth study of the major foreign and European judicial institutes.
Structure and method: A number of work groups will be formed, comprising not more than fifteen participants each, which will be divided according to the selected language (English, French, Spanish). The groups will be guided by two coordinators for the entire duration of the course (an expert linguist and a jurist with language skills), who will in turn collaborate with other professors based on specific activities planned over the course of the seminar.
Beneficiaries: Three groups for the English language, one for French and one for Spanish. Proposed breakdown of groups: 13 Italians and 2 EJTN magistrates per group.
