Scotland has a mixed legal system. It is based on Roman law and influenced by common law, so principles and case law contribute to the development of law. Although the Parliaments of Scotland and England were united in 1707, Scotland maintains a separate legal system with its own structures and origins.
The Judicial Studies Committee promotes judicial education "for the judges by the judges" in the supreme and sheriff courts. Its aim is to assist judges in skills training and continuing professional development and inform them of current legal developments. It organises seminars, induction and refresher courses, and provides written materials and general support.
The JSC employes five full-time staff, including a Director of Judicial Studies and two legal assistants. The Director is a judge (a sheriff) seconded to the JSC. The part-time chairman of the JSC is a Supreme Court judge.
