Royaume Uni : Angleterre et Pays de Galles : The Judicial Studies Board

The court system in England and Wales has developed over many centuries. It is made up of the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords, the High Court [Court of Appeal, High Court and Crown Court] and the Circuit and District Benches. Lay magistrates deal with the bulk of criminal matters, and tribunals deal with a variety of work.

The JSB provides high quality training to full- and part-time judges in the exercise of their jurisdiction in civil, criminal and family law. It advises the Lord Chancellor on the policy for and content of training for lay magistrates, and advises the Lord Chancellor and government departments on the policy for and content of training for tribunals. The JSB promotes closer international co-operation over judicial training.

The JSB is made up of a Board, supported by six executive committees and one advisory committee, whose members are drawn from the full- and part-time judiciary, academics and practitioners. The Board and committees are supported by a secretariat of 47 civil servants.

The budget for 2004 was £9.5 million.
